NAT DEMPSEY: ‘JUNK FOOD’ – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Nat Dempsey’s back at it again with his brand new single, Junk Food. This fast paced catchy track follows in the footsteps of Dempsey’s single Not Quite There Yet, which was released earlier in the year. This single really projects Dempsey’s music onto a larger crowd!

The track starts off as it means to go on, with a strong drumbeat and a sound very reminiscent of The Weeknd’s early music. It feels very early 2010s mixed with today’s indie pop, quite similar to the likes of Fred Roberts’ Runaway. The instrumentation of the song leans more into modern pop, with dreamy guitar tones and riffs sweeping through the whole track. Junk Food definitely sits comfortably in the pop side of the indie genre and strays away from the rock, but the rock fuelled chorus helps to convey the true message of the song- the inner struggles many young people face.

Nat Dempsey is an indie-rock Manchester-based singer-songwriter, with a rural upbringing spent in the beautiful countryside of the Lake District. The lyrics of Junk Food home in on the struggles young people face when moving from such rural areas to bigger industrial cities, like what Dempsey faced himself. These lyrics also reflect the feelings of young adulthood and finding yourself and your place in the world. The catchy riffs and melodies disguise the emotional turmoil of reinventing yourself and how in today’s society, young people either feel extremely marginalised or very individual with often no in between. Upbeat tracks with deeper lyrics seem to have become Dempsey’s personal style, and Junk Food has the sound fitting for a perfect summer playlist (if you ignore the meaning behind the lyrics).

All in all, Junk Food is an amazing single following on from Not Quite There Yet, and will be featured on my summer playlist! Nat Dempsey will certainly be someone I’ll keep a watch for, as his energetic tracks are definitely ones you’d expect to be hearing on mainstream radio stations or at big summer festivals!
