HOMESICK – FLEUR ROUGE, SINGLE REVIEW

FLEUR ROUGE’s newest release ‘Homesick’ is an emotionally-intimate single, a time capsule of childhood emotions brought by her parents’ divorce. The tempest track marks a new chapter for the vibrant rising star. FLEUR’s work so far has earned praise from the likes of BBC Radio 1CLASH and NME. Her April-released sophomore EP, ‘Wish You The Worst’ set out an unignorable music manifesto of distinguishable alt-electro pop sounds and unabashed, boundary-pushing lyricism. Now, ‘Homesick’ comes as the turning of a page, entrancing audiences further into FLEUR’s artistic journey.

On the track, the singer breaks a streak of highly produced, technicolour pop. At it’s mildest moments, ‘Homesick’ is carried by a simple acoustic that unpicks the tumultuous recount. This musical turning point sees FLEUR let her guard down, as her storytelling notably matures from previous projects. To embellish this flourishing diaristic vulnerability, the vocalist slips into French during the single’s progression. Alongside the lyrics that hold it, the lilt is a beacon. It feels deeply personal, embracing confessional themes of the song through allusion to the place she was raised, speaking from the heart of a ‘Homesick’ FLEUR. Simultaneously, to a casual listener, it adds to emotional immersion, deepening ideas of confusion and miscommunication.

At a glance, ‘Homesick’ may appear as one of many typical, plaintive lovesick tunes. However, FLEUR’s innovation does not falter; her harmonious electronic melodies lull us into a third perspective, flipping the trope on its head to delve into “a kind of homesick they’ll never know”. Toeing the paradoxical line between the deeply personal and emotionally almost-universal with an astounding grace appears to be a commendably assured through line of everything FLEUR ROUGE crafts. ‘Homesick’ does an incredible job at preparing us for her third chapter, glinting with the burgeoning talent, addictive melodies and unapologetic storytelling she is rapidly becoming known for.
