Her Picture: ‘Muscle Memory’ – Single Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Glasgow holds a particular affection in this writers heart, in numerous visits to the Dear Green Place, it always tends throw up beautiful little morsels of pleasure that cannot be found elsewhere. A 2am mixed pakora, a pint of Guinness in the Laurieston pub and now Glasgow based three piece Her Picture are the latest litte treat to eminate from within  this cities boundaries.

Following on from their last single ‘Cant Think’, which was itself the follow up to their 2023 debut EP “Don’t Try To Comfort Me”, their new release ‘Muscle Memory’ highlights the bands continued exploration into big expansive, undulating soundscapes, punctuated with quieter softer moments.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the opening, where you are hit full force with big chunky guitar chords that impart a clear sense of foreboding, before lamenting with a slightly Celtic lilt into quieter melancholy. This plays perfectly into the tracks overarching themes of coping in the aftermath of a toxic relationship.

The ensuing three and a half minutes then take you on a journey of wildly varying feelings and emotions that push forcefully into your ears and reverberate beautifully.

As an slightly ironic aside, there are two muscles situated in the ear. The tensor tympani and stapedius both contract in response to loud sounds to protect the inner ear by dampening vibrations.  They certainty have their work cut out with Her Picture’s latest offering, which will last long in the memory after the final notes ring out.
