Belfast-based, alternative band Gush released their new single late last month, titled ‘Like That’. With a punchy guitar rhythm, distorted bassline and well-projected vocals, the song is an instant banger.

Upon pressing play, you are met with a taste of the remainder of the track, with the very heavy and upbeat guitar chords and simple yet very effective drum pattern. As the lyrics come in, any listener is able to see the well-minded blend between the vocals and instruments. When we arrive at the chorus, lead singer Chelsea Andrews really adds a more harsh and stronger projection to the vocal performance, which I find to be quite reminiscent of an early Hayley Williams.
The rest of the band (Clarke, McCammon, Millar) also represent the themes presented vocally very well throughout the entire track. A particular stand out was the bassline, which sounds distorted and hazy throughout the song.
One component of the song that hugely stood out to me was the bridge/refrain. The repetition of the question ‘What to do?’ manages to make the last minute (or so) of the track take on a slightly different style to the rest of the song.

The music video for this song was also particularly interesting to me. The eerie vibes given off by things like using torches and sparklers to light the characters and partially the setting, add a really nice touch. The video also helps to build a world around the song, showcasing the high artistry and talent from both the band and the people who helped out in making artwork, photography and the music video.
Being their first release after their successful and acclaimed EP ‘Exposure Therapy’, it provides a massively strong foundation for their projects and future works. For only coming onto the scene in 2023, the band have set up an absolutely excellent, sonically cohesive back catalog for themselves, making them a huge one to watch in the coming months/year!
