“It’s Amazing to Be Young” is the newest release from the Irish band Fontaines D.C. who have recently been taking over the indie music scene worldwide with the release of their most recent album “Romance”. The single picks up from where they had left off, carrying the same melodic sound and thought provoking lyricism which has already taken them so far.
It feels as though the song begins almost instantly after a brief guitar lick coupled with what appears to be the faint brushes of a xylophone, with Grian Chatten’s airy vocals piercing their way through the track. The lyrics feel simple yet very cleverly targeted towards their reasonably young fan base, with the idea of “the cost getting you down” acting as a cornerstone. It feels very black and white, though it definitely hits the nail on the head.
There’s a smooth transition towards the chorus that helps the song to continue to feel as though it is meandering along a musical river as it opts against a heavier chorus. I think this perhaps signals the bands willingness to now move from their earlier driven Indie-Rock into what could be considered a more thoughtful sound. Whilst this style has been something that the band has succeeded in doing already, perhaps “It’s Amazing To Be Young” suggests that there will be much more of this to come from the group, as it is common for bands to evolve their sounds over time.
In my opinion, I think that it’s very easy listening and something I would find really hard to imagine being actively disliked by any music listener.

However, in this instance I don’t think “It’s Amazing To Be Young” is any of the bands best work and it would be quite hard to argue against that when considering their already impressive repertoire . Of course, it can’t be expected for every song to be as good as the last, though with that being said I don’t feel like “It’s Amazing To Be Young” has either an interesting enough musical arrangement or vocal melody that pushes it up into a higher tier of being a great song.
Also, I think the lyrics here are what stuck out to me as I think they appear much more thoughtful than what they actually are, sometimes tending to feel quite repetitive across the song as well. I feel like a lot of this songs success may just come from the title being so blatantly aimed at its market which such a clear topic of celebrating youth, with this focus therefore potentially taking greater precedence and having some fans deciding they already like the song before having even listened to it yet.
Then again, I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong or bad about the track, but I just don’t feel as if there’s anything there to make it standout. Don’t get me wrong I think Fontaines D.C. are absolutely incredible and are arguably the best new band in the world right now, but in regards to their newest single then I think at the end of the day it’s probably been overhyped just a bit.
I had a friend say to me that great songs only become great in time, and perhaps with this being such a new release it could be hard to make these almost blanket statements. Though at the end of the day, a single is meant to stand out, build up hype and catch your attention and I think that genuinely if it wasn’t for the title then the song wouldn’t be receiving the same level of success.
And I don’t think a song can be considered anything special solely because of its title.
