“The Clause” – GIG REVIEW 06/12/24

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Only a mere stone throw away from Manchester’s acclaimed “02 Ritz” lies the infamous “Gorilla” which last Friday night was well and truly conquered by The Clause. From a spell-binding stage presence and live sound, they proved themselves as a (somewhat) new band that you definitely want on your bucket list.

As mentioned in my video review of the night (which can be found by clicking here) the band were electric with their opening, keen to get the crowd moving from the get-go. And boy did they do that! I would even go as far to argue the crowd only got more up for it as the night went on, constantly raising their own bar.

Having not previously listened to the band, I had heard many good things regarding them and was not in any way disappointed. Speaking to the esteemed Harrison Lord prior to the gig, he had opted to describe them as “mint” clearly now an accurate statement as their powerful sound punctured its way through the crowd.

With this being only a part of their “Weekend Millionaire” tour which has sold out multiple venues across the country, I can see how The Clause with their very modern funk/pop tunes have managed to make a name for themselves. That being said, their acoustic track “Where are you now?” slotted perfectly into the cacophony of simple yet effective upbeat tracks, providing a much desired touch of diversity and arguably class too.

Finally, the closing track “In My Element” was something else. Having amassed impressive figures of upwards of 2.5 million streams on Spotify, it easily would’ve torn Gorilla’s roof off had the venue not been under a train track. It feels as though it has a slightly Arctic Monkey’s esque intro yet clearly with their own twist on it alongside the anthemic chorus. Almost effortlessly it seemed, the room was sent into absolute carnage.

The band received an 8.6/10 from me in my video review, with it being noted how they undoubtedly still have much more space to grow into and are yet to peak. If I had to be critical, I would say that perhaps many of the upbeat songs feel very similar and lack any variation or diversity. Then again, I can safely say that I’m going to add some of these to my playlist after the gig anyway and if this is the sound that The Clause want to push then it is clearly working wonders for them.

I look forward to seeing them again and what the future holds for them and if you haven’t already then make sure to catch The Clause next chance you get.
