MONDAY’S PROBLEM: 18 – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Set to release on December 7th, ‘18’ is the second single from Monday’s Problem, an upcoming indie/alternative rock band based in Manchester. Following on from their highly praised first single, ‘Black and White’, which has gained 17k streams to date, ‘18’ continues to build anticipation surrounding the band’s future.

Their newer single is a triumph. The fresh guitar creates the ‘raw sound’ the band are keen to achieve. Monday’s Problem seem to deliver something people are after, creating unfiltered, authentic-sounding music in contrast to the current popular wave of heavily-produced pop music.

The song itself was almost entirely written in a single hour. Although the band explained this ‘doesn’t happen often’, for this single it added to the nonchalant, slightly sarcastic lyrics. In particular, the lyricism of ‘18 makes it a fun single, undeniably indicative of some early tracks by The 1975. The tale of a night out, its highs and lows, confirms Monday’s Problem’s status as an extremely cool new band in the Manchester music scene.

After the release of both ‘Black and White’ and 18Monday’s Problem are well on their way to building a confident image, reminiscent of bands like The Artic Monkeys. Their singles play into the attempted resurgence of the early 2000’s indie sleaze, another reason why the release of 18 is exciting, exactly what a wide audience is looking for. It’s fair to say that the musicality and image created so far by Monday’s Problemresembles that of famed bands like The Strokes and The Libertines. Given the intentionality and confidence in their craft, it seems like the only thing separating them from these renowned artists is more time, attention, and music.

18 perfectly explains the buzz created by ‘Black and White’, and the 7k listeners they have already gained; it goes to show that this release is a must-listen. Releasing on the 7th of December, anyone missing the authentic sound of 2000s indie rock, or looking for a new favourite band can find everything they are looking for in 18.
