EP Review: Rats & Rashes/Butcher Boy – For I The Badger

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Three piece For I The Badger are composed of Stuart, on lead vocals and guitar, Scott Mumby on Backing Vocals and Bass, and Ben Owen on drums.

After forming in Lincolnshire last year, their EP Rats & Rashes/Butcher Boy released on the 16th of November of this year. The tracks circulate around topics of poverty, injustice, addiction, and the social, political, and economical environment. Rats & Rashes is a chaotic, gritty tune… is Rats & Rashes all that’s left of society? The lyric “satellites to the bigger issue…” particularly highlights this. The sense of dissatisfaction with society comes across well in this track, and Scott’s backing vocals on the chorus emphasise the despotic universe which this track draws on. The world we live in.

Butcher Boy draws on the imagery of the common man- not always having enough, and feels angry in the state of the climate. The tracks are tied together as on track with a turbulent interlude, making the whole six minutes and 37 seconds an energetic, fierce journey, leaving you to feel rebellious and defiant… in a good way. If there’s more music where this came from, we should expect some mega mosh pits soon.
