DARK AND TWISTIES: ‘THE WILD’ SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

With it’s nostalgic sound and sentimental storytelling, The Wild is a powerful debut song from Swansea-based Alt-Folk quintet Dark and Twisties. After entering the music scene just a few months ago, Dark and Twisties have already shared their ethereal energy with many fans across the country.

Throughout the track, their influences coming from traditional folk music can be heard, with hypnotising harmonies and transcendent tones creating an otherworldly feeling. From the first note, it’s apparent how skilled Dark and Twisties are, and how beautifully crafted The Wild is. The single itself is a description of the dark beauty found in nature, and just like the lyrics, the instrumentation flows and crashes like a storm. Creating a vibrant image, The Wild expresses how fragile our life is compared to the power of the natural world. It narrates the deeper emotions surrounding our existence in an eerie yet comforting way.

Dark and Twisties have recently started to make waves in the folk music scene with their depictions of the allure of nature. Intertwining their angelic vocals and heartfelt basslines, they have produced gentle melodies and their music transports listeners to a mystical place. Formed of Sarah Birch, Kate Ronconi, Sarah Passmore, Danny Kilbride and Huw Rees, these musicians are also members of Lost Tuesday Society, Rag Foundation and Sarah and the Creepy Uncles. With so much musical experience behind them, the band’s songs are dark stories, both old and new, twisted together to form enticing tracks, such as The Wild – hence the name Dark and Twisties.

The Wild, as a debut single, really showcases the talent of the band and builds anticipation for their upcoming album Ungrateful Women, and if it is full of tracks like this, it is one to look out for! Talking about the song, Kate Ronconi conveyed that The Wild was created to express the significance of nature.

” We wanted to capture the moment when nature reminds us of its strength and importance. “
