Last Saturday (2nd November) NicknXmes, a fresh new artist from Wigan, played his first headline gig at The Snug in Atherton. Following the release of his debut single ‘Nobody But Me’ in July, NicknXmes has performed a number of support slots across the North West, and with his growing fanbase, his first headline show was filled with excitement and anticipation.

Double Yellows kicked off the night with their raw and lively sound. Despite being a last minute replacement, they pulled off an incredible opening set. Playing hits from their self titled debut EP, the band showcased their blossoming talent and surely left with more new fans.
Taking to the stage shortly after were Snowdrop – a Macclesfield based band – with a sound similar to that of Catfish and the Bottlemen and The Kooks. The band, consisting of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ryley, lead guitarist Sam, bassist Connor and drummer Dylan, shared their original soft indie rock tracks with an appreciative audience. Their new single Daisy On My Mind was a crowd favourite.

As the main act of the night, NicknXmes (Nick Randall) took to the stage and his hour long set was a performance to remember! With his unique setup of just a bass guitar and a loop pedal, Nick had already set himself apart from other musicians but his stage presence is what cements him as an artist to look out for. His deep basslines were felt throughout every track and it was awe inspiring to see a stripped back act perform such accomplished songs using only a loop pedal. With infectious, funky grooves and authentic meandering lyrics, every hit was met with enthusiastic applause. Nick’s rapport and engagement with the audience along with his warmth and confidence was captivating. A shoeless performance featuring a wander into the crowd made it truly memorable.
Sprinkled throughout his set, NicknXmes played several covers including Arctic Monkeys’ Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? and Aloe Blacc‘s I Need a Dollar. I was lucky enough to talk to Nick after his performance and he elaborated on his choice of covers, saying ‘you have to be very particular with what songs you choose to play due to the fact not many hits have recognisable basslines’. Again, highlighting his originality and skills as a musician.
Nick’s unusual setup accidentally fell together over time as he merged his love for looping with his bass playing skills. Listening to his original tracks, such as the debut performance of Morning Time you can enjoy this instrumentation coupled with his song writing, inspired by legends such as Matt Corby and Bill Withers. NicknXmes is an artist you have to see live!
