MOSS SIDE SAUNA CLUB: 122BPM, SINGLE REVIEW

A distorted electronic beat and touches of humorous spoken word serve as the driving force behind Moss Side Sauna Club’s hottest release, 122BPM. The Manchester rockers have wired into a funk-infused motherboard to offer up a track laced with fuzzy colours and buzzing with electro-clash beats that gives us a taste of the future, and leaves a tingling feel on the lips of those yearning for freakishly bold instrumentals.

Moss Side Sauna Club have learnt to abandon all caution and don’t look back; the hot pop trio are following up from their last single, MY WEIRD APPETITE, with a strong sense of self, and plenty of force. As a commentary on confessionalism and the exploration of individuality, 122BPM collides in a swirl of technological bliss within a plethora of soundscapes that seem to effortlessly complement each other.

122BPM feels as if it was born out of an unusual circumstance as it twists traditional pop arbiters to fit within its wires-and-transistors circuit of indie-laden rhythm guitars and a vocal insert almost akin to Yard Act or BIG SPECIAL. The track oozes with genre-defying layers as it ebbs between heavy rock drums and distorted electronica instrumentals; the band’s Northern grit seeps through the shadows of the neon lights to add an unexpected yet well-received edge.

The track never reaches a single climax, adopting an in-your-face approach to progression as it floats in the ether of sonic waves that wouldn’t sound out of place on a MySpace profile. 122BPM initially teeters on the calmer side of audio attack before launching into a roaming soundscape that could only be attributed to a band that knows exactly where it wants to be. Moss Side Sauna Club embodies that exact sentiment.

The trio open up the floor to a whimsical injection of multi-faceted vocal layers that only propel the following instrumentals further into a gleaming implosion of sound. A sense of teenage angst is dashed into the mix as vocalist Sam Craighan breaks through the soundscape with a spoken word sonnet – 122BPM embodies every element of a quirkier rock track without existing as a metaphorical car crash of sound. The track fills every corner of negative space we reside in with well-rounded instrumentals and polished production values that simply leave you reaching for more.
