FLEUR ROUGE: ‘RABBIT HOLE’ – TRACK REVIEW

April 18th sees the release of ‘Wish You The Worst’, the ambitious sophomore EP of stylistic London-born French-raised artist, FLEUR ROUGE. Following from her debut ‘What Makes U Think I Care’ and its accolades, like BBC Introducing and Radio 1, her new, charged release lives up to expectations. In fact, it signals a shift in direction from the emerging artist, who “wanted to create a body of work that was honest but still sassy. It’s got that unapologetic, fierce FLEUR ROUGE flavour but I’d say it shows a more raw and vulnerable side to me than previous work.”

The EP is indulgently introspective compared to prior releases, FLEUR eloquently communicates vulnerable ideas through a show-stopping, pop star delivery. This multitude is captured in the many layers of ‘Rabbit Hole’. The project’s focal track has its roots in an Alice in Wonderland aestheticism. Intuitive electro-pop production sings for itself, delivering a darker track, richly immersive and thematic. There is an element of theatrics in FLEUR’s artistry, with darker beats backing the resonance of her honest story-telling. ‘Rabbit Hole’ is intricately structured as the shining soundtrack to a wider story. With the conviction of a world-famed popstar, the newer artist conjures deep affiliation, inviting listeners into her sonic world.

The track is almost trance-inducing, the consuming depth of its instrumental drawing you in, as if down a rabbit hole, as the melody spirals to echo the intense nature of the anxious subject matter. Her raw vulnerability, showcases indulgence into “the idea of going down a rabbit hole which is exactly what it feels like when you’re in that hole, everything around you feels magnified and no matter how hard you try it’s like you’re no longer in control of your feelings or emotions and your mind takes over.” The vibrantly compelling collaboration of darkly charged production and brighter, empowered vocals evoke an alluring command for intrigue. ‘Rabbit Hole’ is an enthralling, charming tale of relatable anxieties, sung through a tunnel of stark musical talent and intuition that sparks curiosity and excitement for ‘Wish You the Worst’ in its entirety.
