THE KITES: ‘COMEBACK KID’ – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Leeds-based band The Kites are back! They have recently released their single ‘Comeback Kid’, which is a heart-warming and reflective tune focusing on taking a more positive outlook on life after quite a rough patch.

Firstly, the melodies of the guitar on this song are very upbeat and I find it to be quite reminiscent of a coming-of-age style movie, which really allows the listener to gain a feel for the tonality presented within the track. Although the song can become quite instrumentally heavy at points, it does not affect the high energy exerted.

Lyrically, the track is very reflective, speaking a fair bit about feeling more positive and euphoric after finding yourself in a hard and potentially dark place. Using phrases like ‘I feel like I’m on the home straight’ really makes the song feel like a piece of advice and shows the guidance you may need to ‘comeback’.

One thing that really stood out on this track is how the vocals blend very well into the instrumental accompaniment of the song, enforcing them both as equally important components to the song and it’s basis. It really allows the instruments and their sounds to stand out as well as the lyrics and vocal performance.

The band formed in 2019 and have had an incredible journey so far, releasing a multitude of different singles and EPs. The band have really made their mark since forming, such as being played on BBC Introducing and even a feature on Radio 1! They are definitely ones to watch for the rest of the year, with a new EP teased on Instagram in December. After this amazing single, it is safe to say their upcoming releases will be nothing short of fantastic!
