LONG ISLAND: ‘FRAGILE’ – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Huddersfield-based Indie quartet LONG ISLAND are rapidly climbing steps in the Yorkshire music scene with their latest offering ‘Fragile’ – an emotional ballad which tells tales of love, loss and the ephemeral nature of life itself.

Laced with hook-laden heartfelt lyrics, the band’s new release adopts a more mellow, dulcet attitude which casts light on their maturity and multifaceted talent as an up-and-coming Indie production.

‘Fragile’ serves as a vulnerable insight into the band’s emotional states following a car accident in August of last year. This track is steeped in the realisation that life truly is too short, and can disappear at any fleeting moment. The low-key acoustics backing a thoughtful lyrical stint provided by frontwoman Rizzy Stephenson are bound to tug on the heartstrings of their swiftly-growing fanbase. Her uncouth exposè of experiences with fear and vulnerability marks the turn of a new chapter for the band as they explore their impressive musicianship, and take a hold of the local scene.

The track is propelled by climactic drum beats laden with angst and emotion, framing the fragility of the vocal work to undoubtedly create a hard-hitting single that you can still tap your foot to. LONG ISLAND’s effortless guitar licks cannot go unmentioned as they charge the track with a bright spark of life amongst the steadier instrumentals throughout. Elements of powerful synth build a hard-hitting bridge that moves into a merciful concluding chorus; with a gentle soundscape boosting lyrical work to the forefront of the track, listeners reach the end of their poignant journey enclosed in the comfort of soft vocals and sentimental guitars.

‘Fragile’ was born out of a bittersweet reflection on a traumatic period in the group’s expedition, and has become their most tender and gentle offering to date. Their steadily growing discography boasts an array of well-crafted tracks suited to a live environment, with their debut EP ‘The Freedom of Being Young’ encapsulating elements of bright Bedroom Indie Pop and punchy instrumentals.

This anthem for hope highlights the importance of holding loved ones close, and will be unveiled for the first time at LONG ISLAND’s biggest gig yet on February 8th at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds as part of This Feeling’s ‘Big in 2025’ showcase.

With huge things on the horizon, it’s safe to say that this well-received exploration into bittersweet melodies and captivating storytelling will certainly kick up a fuss for LONG ISLAND in their not-so-distant future.
