There’s no messing about with “The Vanishing” which erupts to life from the first role of the dice. For fans of Radiohead and Bob Dylan, the trio Atlas Rivers set the staple for what good underground music is all about and show that they’re a group to be taken seriously.
It feels refreshing to not have another indie-pop (or something of that sorts) song to be reviewing, as Atlas Rivers provide a fresh perspective to the current musical landscape, with melodies which linger in the back of your mind rather than punch a hole into it. Everything from the guitar to the bass to the drums feels so perfectly placed and balanced alongside the seemingly modern day rarity of thought-provoking lyrics. “The Vanishing” is it’s own song, straight to the point and (as previously mentioned) has many elements which remind you of the brilliance of Radiohead.
That being said, “The Vanishing” still has it’s own little quirks and flair surrounding it. Following on from the bands debut single “Towards the Sun”, it’s clear the trio have their own idea of how they want to sound. From their vocal harmonies to their sudden yet effective switches in tempo and feel, I think it’s these unique elements which help the group to standout and be much more than just another indie band.
I can’t really point out anything that’s wrong with this song despite it probably be of a genre or style that I would normally prefer. I think if I had to stretch then I’d say that maybe if the song was more concise and under the 4 minute mark then that could benefit it, especially with the nature of it being a single. Then again, there isn’t any moment of the song that doesn’t work or flow together perfectly and I would be pushing it a bit if I were to say “The Vanishing” feels too long.
It’s clear to see the class and experience behind the musicianship of Atlas Rivers who I think deserve much more credit and hype that what they are currently receiving, yet if they keep releasing tunes like this then surely this will all come its way in due course. This is the first single I’ve reviewed where I’m genuinely excited to see what the band has coming next, so it’s safe to say “The Vanishing” has done a pretty good job.
