Sheffield band “SHABBAH” have released their 6th single “Flood of Passion” which is an instant “small gig” classic.
Having been to many gigs myself, bands can struggle to make their own true statement on the night without having a song that gets the crowd going, and “Flood of Passion” is definitely fits that bill. It’s fast, energetic and loud, with intricate drumming as well as heavy guitar that carries the song from its start to its finish.

Whilst definitely effective, this type of song has become almost a staple for underground bands since they are easy enough to piece together, and simply cannot be faulted by a crowd once feet begin tapping. Yet in some regards, can this go against the song?
Without naming any other particularly famous bands from Sheffield, it could be said that it has been difficult for many new bands to escape the shadows of the “Monkey Mania” which has been left behind. I think that in a way “Flood of Passion” may fall into this trap.
As mentioned I have absolutely no problem with bands releasing fast, upbeat songs, or taking influence from the artists that they’ve grown up listening to. Yet for me, “Flood of Passion” doesn’t really feel to have anything in particular that allows it to standout, or a creative edge that sets it apart from what has already come before.
By no means at all is it a bad song in any way, I just feel like it just needs that little extra nudge to help make it into a great song, though I have no doubt that at a gig this could easily be a crowd favourite.
In my ever present curiosity, I did actually listen to the rest of “SHABBAH”s songs, to see if the rest fell into a similar pattern and I was pleased to discover that they didn’t, with “Pub Kid” being a personal favourite of mine. I think they’ve shown they do have a genuine knack for songwriting, and in the instance of songs such as “Flood of Passion”, I think that if they tried to embrace some of their unique elements slightly more, then they could really step into the category of being a great band.
Overall, “Flood of Passion” is a decent enough song, but that’s only where it lands for me.
