JACK’S SAVING GRACE: SLEEPING NEXT TO FIREWORKS – EP REVIEW

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Sleeping Next To Fireworks” is the newest release from Manchester-based indie-rock band Jack’s Saving Grace. The EP includes two previous singles “You Really Do It For Me” and “Unsigned”, along with their newest song, “Sleeping Next To Fireworks” and a radio edit of this.

The title track kicks off the EP, with a sustained introduction that builds upon itself to ease the listener into the song. The guitar riff instantly reminds the listener of The Cure and is prominent throughout the song – it becomes very recognisable and quite catchy. Despite the radio edit of “Sleeping Next To Fireworks” being a slightly better length, the song itself isn’t one to get bored to, as the tempo is just right, and the controversially long intro mixed with lengthy instrumental breaks between verses work together to keep the listener interested.

“Unsigned” is the second song of the EP begins with a comical recording of dialogue, which catches the listener off-guard and starts the song off on a light-hearted note (a very Northern one). However, this is juxtaposed by the melancholy guitar and slow drums, which continue throughout the song, and splits up the EP’s rhythm, as the other songs are more upbeat. Despite the introduction being promising, the rest of the song never seems to reach a peak, and the lyrics seem slightly disjointed from the instrumental parts.

When hearing the final song, “You Really Do It For Me”, the listener is immediately reminded of The Clash, due to the pronounced bassline. Each song on the EP is quite different in terms of beat and use of instruments, however the vocals seem slightly flat in all three songs. The titular track was definitely the right choice to make the main focus of the EP, and it definitely has the potential to be built upon and turned into a full album.
