Attempting to “carry the torch” of the Sheffield music scene and coming off the success of a run of several shows, including their debut performance, the young 4-piece band ‘The Nothings’ have recently released their first single ‘Jellyfish’ into the world. Taking influences from a number of bands such as Foo Fighters, Deftones, and My Bloody Valentine, ‘The Nothings’ hope that this new release is the start of a massive latter half of the year.
‘Jellyfish’ begins with a lowkey instrumental section that adds a bit of personality to the track and demonstrates one of the main strengths of this debut single – the instrumentation. All the instrument tracks in the song blend brilliantly, resulting in a song that sonically comes together very well; ‘Jellyfish’ sounds great. This is further emphasized by the production of the song, which really adds a lot of punch and clarity to the whole single.

However, at points in the track ‘Jellyfish’ in my opinion can come across as slightly flat, it feels sometimes a little too safe. This is perfectly understandable for a debut single from a band that is still very much finding their feet and their sound, but I do feel like the track could benefit from a bit of extra experimentation or ‘pizzazz’.
While I feel that ‘Jellyfish’ could do more, this by no means makes it a bad song, far from it – this track is a very strong opener for ‘The Nothings’. This band have an obviously strong core to build from with the fabulously powerful instrumentation mentioned prior and some talented vocal tracks. I can’t wait to see what ‘The Nothings’ do next, I’m sure this is only the start for this band and I’m extremely excited to see them grow into themselves as a band and to develop their sound.
