TAYLOR SWIFT & PARAMORE: ERAS TOUR 100TH SHOW, LIVERPOOL | LIVE REVIEW

Paramore

Hayley Williams – 1 of 3 original Paramore members & lead singer

The much-anticipated show of Paramore, (as Taylor Swift’s support act) got off to a slightly delayed start, beginning after 6:30 pm due to the typical English rainy weather. Despite the eager fans in attendance, unfortunately there were noticeable empty seats in the crowd. However, when the iconic American rock band finally took the stage, they delivered an electrifying pop-punk performance, wow-ing the audience. Despite the high energy, some fans were disappointed that That’s What You Get and Brick by Boring Brick were missing from the setlist.

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, Paramore stands as a fitting counterpart to Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour. Just like Swift, the band has undergone significant transformations, transitioning from emo beginnings to established power-pop artists. Their performance of Talking HeadsBurning Down The House not only paid homage to their recent collaboration with David Byrne but also showcased their wide discography, reflecting Byrne’s influence and enhancing the immersive nature of the concert experience

Paramore‘s set was a masterful display of their musical prowess, featuring a blend of their chart-topping hits and songs cherished by their dedicated fanbase. A particularly delightful and their surprise song for this 100th show of the Eras Tour was Caught In The Middle from their 2017 album After Laughter. Despite having a vast repertoire spanning two decades, the band managed to curate a setlist that evoked nostalgia and delivered a string of anthems, much to the appreciation of the audience.

I had a fantastic time watching Hayley, Taylor, and Zac perform alongside the talented touring band ‘Parafour,’ which includes Joey Mullen, Brian Robert Jones, Logan MacKenzie, and Joey Howard. Their performance exuded a contagious and vibrant sense of joy, showcasing their outstanding musical talents and the subtle choreography they incorporated. The fans’ excitement when they all came out onto the walkway was truly palpable.

Taylor Swift

This show was especially significant as it marked Taylor’s first performance in Liverpool and broke the record for attendance at Anfield Stadium as well as being the 100th show. Despite the dreary weather, Taylor’s performance brought a sense of joy to the atmosphere, and it was clear that she was genuinely thrilled to be in Liverpool. She began with Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince from her Lover album before performing songs from every stage of her career, in no particular order, although she tended to start with the older albums and focused more on her recent material.

The stunning performances of Folklore and Evermore mashed into each other serve as compelling evidence of Taylor Swift‘s exceptional ability to infuse intimacy into large-scale spectacles. The juxtaposition of the serene beauty found in songs like Cardigan, Betty, and Willow with the grandeur of Anfield Stadium is truly extraordinary. The overwhelming and sustained 3-minute applause that followed the performances is a clear indication that Champagne Problems was exceptionally well-received and emerged as a standout highlight of the evening.

The Eras Tour is truly a unique experience, especially with the incorporation of The Tortured Poets Department tracks. Despite being relatively new, these songs have been received with an incredible amount of enthusiasm from the audience, with many chart-topping hits and fan-faves.

While on The Eras Tour, Swifties can always expect surprises, especially during the acoustic surprise song section. At her “first sold-out show in Liverpool,” Taylor paid tribute to the city by performing I Can See You, accompanied by scenes from its music video, which was shot there. This seamlessly transitioned into Mine. Swift also impressed with a mash-up of Cornelia Street from Lover and elements of MidnightsMaroon. These unexpected performances showcased Swift’s versatility and her knack for continually delighting her fans.

Attending the show and watching Taylor perform still feels like a dream to me. The meticulous attention to detail in the pyrotechnics, lighting, and stage setup was absolutely incredible. The standing tickets we had were £150 each, but they were definitely worth it for the nearly four and a half hours of sensational music and performances from Paramore and Taylor.

The tour has defied all expectations, standing up to close examination and sparking in-depth conversations. It doesn’t just meet the high standards set for it; it surpasses them. This raises an intriguing question for the future: With this level of success, has Taylor Swift now ascended beyond stadiums? What could be next for her, and how will she surpass this accomplishment of selling out worldwide stadiums of 150-odd-shows in seconds?
