Music, and society in general, is arguably dominated by tradition and a lucky few older, experienced individuals. But with this dated and overall negative outlook comes fresh new talent looking to change the narrative and break through the barriers with force. Enter Gravy: the Leeds-based 4-piece looking to leave a more personal mark on music with their blend of shoegaze, alt-rock, and post-punk influences and ideas. “We love all kinds of music,” Harrison explains. “Me and Ben love northern soul, Jacob loves 90’s trance and house. But the main artists that inspire us would be, The Night Cafe, DMA’s, The Stone Roses, Pastel and Slowdive.”
Formed in 2022, the band (comprised of Harrison Bailey, Ben O’halloran, Jacob Priestley and Louis Tuxworth) entirely consist of under-18s, and are a real driving force for the next generation of musicians keeping a real DIY genre alive. This is an important factor for the band, as Harrison notes “I think that all young people should definitely be pushing to share their music – it’s important to hear what young people have to say.”

Debut single ‘Wait Another Day’ captures their trademark sound: catchy hooks, flashy sequences, and impressively tight rhythms, and it’s no surprise they’ve graced the stages of some of the top Leeds venues (think Stylus, The Wardrobe, The Brudenell Social Club, and The Key Club) as well as being announced as CRASH Records’ Next Big Thing for 2024. It’s these type of venues that shape the feel of the track: it transports you to the dimly-lit halls and the sticky dancefloors of your favourite music venue. The track oozes sweet indie energy from the get-go, with tender vocals that sit comfortably in the mix above an angular bassline. It feels undeniably easy-going to listen to, and is the perfect formula for a new age of youth-led alternative music. More importantly, Gravy have found an ideal level of sophistication in their sound which works perfectly with the simplistic, fun edge to their work. Thematically, ‘Wait Another Day’ explores a feeling of deep longing for a person whether they’re right for you or aren’t. Speaking on the creative process around the track, Harrison explained ‘It started with me writing an initial idea of the skeleton of the song, and then I took it into the practice rooms and Ben and me at the time were obsessing over Kevin Shields’ (My Bloody Valentine) guitar parts, so Ben’s tone came from that. After we wrote it we got into the studio with our pal Lewis Browne who helped us to produce it.”
