As she embarks on her solo career, Perrie has dropped her surname and released her first song, Forget About Us, which has already left fans ‘obsessed’. The track features impressive vocals that have been labelled the ‘voice of a generation’ and was a hit, reaching #1 on UK iTunes within hours of release. The song also includes a yet-to-be-released video directed by Jake Nava, (Beyonce, Adele, P!NK). This is Perrie’s first release since Little Mix’s hiatus in 2022, following in the footsteps of bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock, who has already started her solo career. Jade Thirlwall is also planning to release solo music soon.
Forget About Us has been co-written with none other than the Grammy-winning artist Ed Sheeran alongside David Hodges, with production by Solom0n, Bas Van Daalen, Mark Stent, Tre Jean-Marie and Andrew Goldstein. In a recent interview, Perrie revealed that she had made some adjustments to the lyrics to make them more personal to her own experiences and relatable to her fans. The song’s lyrics centre around the theme of dealing with a break-up while still being happy for the person as they move on with their life.
Fans have speculated that the lyrics could be about Perrie’s relationship and break-up with One Direction star Zayn, or even her friendship break-up with former Little Mix bandmate Jesy Nelson, however, I think the song has been created intentionally to be able to be relatable to any situation.
The chorus is the highlight of the song, with Perrie’s stunning vocals reaching new heights. The once-quiet and restrained melody is replaced by a lively and upbeat tune that’s perfect for a summer day. The lyrics offer a mature take on relationships, acknowledging that things don’t always work out perfectly, but that every experience helps shape us into who we are.

The song has hints of country music, adding depth and character to the melody. It looks at the ‘what ifs’ in life, prompting the listener to reflect on the past and the choices they’ve made. It’s a celebration of growth and moving on, with both parties finding their happy ever-afters. The lyrics encourage us to think about the life we never had but also to appreciate the life we have now. All in all, it’s a song that’s sure to resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost.
