OUR SONG OF THE WEEK!
The Kites‘ latest offering, “Hello,” showcases a zenith of their musical prowess. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of indie and pop rock that have come to define their distinctive sound. From the moment the track unfurls, we are greeted by a familiar sound reminiscent of The 1975, 5 Seconds Of Summer, and The Kooks, echoing through a labyrinth of funky guitar riffs and a syncopated, driving drum rhythm crafted by the adept hands of Ollie Staniforth.
Joe’s voice becomes a beacon, guiding listeners through the multifaceted layers of sound, while Ollie’s percussive virtuosity propels the band’s live energy with unwavering force, electrifying the air. Élodie’s bass lines resonate with magnetic charm, infusing the sonic landscape with depth and richness. Amidst it all, the ethereal guitar melodies transport listeners to euphoric heights, culminating in Jake’s electrifying solo.
The poignant lyrics of “Hello” delve into the themes of self-discovery, longing, and the tumultuous emotions that come with being a teenager. The Kites reflect on a brief encounter with someone who has captured their heart, conveying the excitement and butterflies, but getting nervous and messing it up. But later on, getting the person’s number and trying to start afresh by calling them. Right from the start, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of the person of interest, with their brown eyes and small tattoos, and the nervousness felt in their presence. The metaphor of being “put out like a cigarette” delicately captures the vulnerability of feeling rejected but determined to mend the connection.

Yet, amidst the splendour of “Hello,” there lies a solitary lament—the brevity of its duration. At a mere 2 minutes and 39 seconds, one can’t help but yearn for more of Joe’s mesmerizing vocals, longing to linger a while longer in the embrace of The Kites‘ musical embrace. The trajectory of The Kites is certainly one to keep a close eye on, and the excitement is mounting for their upcoming live performance on April 19th at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds. With tickets priced at a tenner-a-piece, there’s no reason to miss out on what is sure to be an unforgettable night.
