Coming Up Roses are beginning a new chapter in their careers, as they release a new single titled “I’m In Bed”, alongside their new label INH records. This single takes a different approach than their previously released discography, as they establish a more rock oriented, post-punk sound, unique in its explosive sound yet reflective lyrics. Influenced by both the south asian indie scene, and the english scene, they bring a sound that can be appreciated by both traditional and modern ears.
Though the quartet is based in northwest London, the bands lead singer/bassist Emily Sera and guitarist Darius Oon hail from Singapore, which is in part where the bands multicultural sound comes from. In 2022, the duo came to the UK where they met with guitarist Charlie Wilson and drummer Caleb Blake. This is the 4th release from Coming Up Roses, following 3 EP’s – “Coming Up Roses”, “Everything Is”, and “Waters”. This single is also a preview of the band’s upcoming EP album being released in June 2025. The single was produced by Andrea Trevisan and mixed by Caesar Evans.
The single itself is opened by a dreamlike yet persistent melody, that is accompanied by several distorted guitar riffs that almost echo from Sera’s vocals. All these elements lead into a passionate chorus, encapsulating the traditional alt rock feel the band was going for. There’s a certain push and pull between the instruments and vocals that keeps the momentum alive, like a sonic tug-of-war between serenity and chaos. Sera’s delivery is both intimate and urgent, as if each line is being drawn directly from a stream of consciousness, barely filtered.
The bridge is particularly interesting, as much of the single is stripped down, and the vocals shift from singing to speaking. This shift showcases the vulnerability of both the music and its instrumentalists, and is reminiscent of many alternative rock bands, such as Sonic Youth, a band famous for bassist Kim Gordon’s many monologues throughout their discography. There’s minimal instrumentation—just enough to carry the words—but it’s this restraint that makes the moment so powerful.
The lyrics bring awareness to mental health issues, and remind listeners that they cannot be responsible for every emotion they feel. The songwriting doesn’t aim to romanticize pain, but rather to present it as something real, lived-in, and valid.
“I’m In Bed” marks an exciting and introspective turn for Coming Up Roses, showcasing their ability to evolve without losing the core of what makes their sound so distinct. It’s a track that not only pushes their sonic boundaries but also deepens their lyrical vulnerability, balancing heaviness with intimacy in a way that feels both fresh and grounded. With this release, the band doesn’t just hint at what’s to come—they announce it boldly, with a rawness that demands attention. As they continue to grow into their sound, “I’m In Bed” stands as both a declaration and a promise—one that leaves listeners anticipating what the band will uncover next.
