Taking inspiration from artists such as Joesef, Mk.gee and Ben Howard, emerging artist Nat Dempsey released his new single ‘Not Quite There Yet’ on March 21st. The single is the artist’s second release after his debut single ‘Everyday People’ released in Q2 of 2024.
The song takes on a pretty upbeat instrumental, yet it’s lyrics touch on more emotional topics such as nostalgia and growing up.
It opens with a guitar riff in reduced volume, which helps to simultaneously introduce the lyrics which both kick off instantly after hitting play.
The catchy lyrics begin by talking about being young and how the artist’s perspective on the world has changed: ‘feeling like my world’s changed, don’t you? It’s been a while since we were younger’. Opening a song like this is a really powerful move and helps massively to set the tone and feeling of the song, and this works particularly well with nostalgia.
The rest of the song continues in the same sort of area, and has some really interesting production/technical elements that are able to really grab the attention of people/listeners on any analytic level, such as changes in volume of the instrumentals which helps to put emphasis on lyrics at times.
The song will leave you thinking about more indie rock and bedroom pop artists as it fits in very well within these 2 genres and sets up a really good foundation for the artist to keep on making music in these spaces of the industry.
The song’s reflective and nostalgic nature really helped me to imagine a more summery and bright vibe, and that’s really where the song exists and shines bright in my mind.
Overall, the song is a foot-tapping, instant classic and shows off the potential of Dempsey’s work in the future. I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely found a new artist to keep a look out for!
