Not even the Yorkshire rain could smother the blazing spirit and warm, irresistible stage presence of Lucia and the Best Boys as they took to the outdoor stage of Get Together Festival 2026 for one of their first live performances of the year. Despite the weather, the crowd seemed to grow in size and sound with each song as fans and passersby were drawn into their magnetic set.

After a period of isolation to immerse themselves in the creation of their upcoming album, this performance marked a triumphant return to the stage equipped with brand new material. In addition to some existing fan favourites, this show presented the opportunity for Lucia and the Best Boys to debut some previously unheard songs and offer a taste of what’s to come.
Following this monumental performance, we caught up with songstress and front-woman Lucia Fairful to gather some insight into the world of ‘Picking Petals’ and this new era for the band…
How’s festival season been treating you so far? Are there any highlights from your recent live performances?
It’s been so refreshing to get back to playing shows and getting to play songs off the new album. We’ve been taking the approach of acting as if we are a completely new band and playing a majority of new songs in the set. For the last album, we had to use a lot of tracks for the electronic side of things and needed to add emphasis on sounds that were impossible to achieve without track – everything feels a lot more organic now, which feels quite full circle and grounding.
You took a step back from live shows over the last year to work on the album, what was it like being away from the stage and how is it to be back again?
Playing live isn’t a huge part of every artist’s world but it always has been for us. We spend a lot of time rehearsing and figuring out ways to better our live performance. Being on stage and seeing people connect to what I spend so long creating in such an isolating space is really one of the main reasons I make music.
What’s been your favourite song to play live?
I’ve really been enjoying playing ‘Lonely Girl’. People seem to enjoy it live, which again makes it more enjoyable for me!
Your new album Picking Petals, isn’t far away from release now, how are you feeling about it and what can we expect?
I feel like this album was the album I was always supposed to make, it feels very current to me and where I’m at now and what I love about music. It embodies all those things.
The name in particular ‘Picking Petals’ paints a really vivid picture, what does that phrase and title mean to you?
To me the phrase feels quite childlike and playful, something you would do at school when you had a crush on someone. Feeling inspired by nature and landscape within lyrics was only something that happened when I was a little older and I learned to appreciate it again. After growing up in a rural area that felt quite isolating, I have gone full circle and use it as my muse now. There are a lot of love songs on this album that were created in a countryside setting, the title rings true to every song and I knew straight after we made the demo of ‘Picking Petals’ that it was going to be an incredibly important song for this album.
What/who were your main inspirations, both in songwriting and sound, when putting this album together? What vision did you have in your head and how does the finished body of work compare?
To be honest I wasn’t listening to anything to purposely influence the album or find inspiration. I was listening to a lot of trad music and have always loved it, so I guess that did influence me in some way, I realised that although we aren’t making that sort of music what’s to stop us using those instruments?
You’ve just announced the next single, ‘Big Romance’ featuring Abigail Morris, what can you tell us about that and how did the collaboration come into fruition?
I met Abi around 6 years ago and she was one of those people that I instantly connected with. She was at the beginning of starting a band and we were looking for a keys player and backing vox singer so she learnt the songs and came to Scotland to play some shows with us. We played ‘Big Romance’ at these shows, a song which she has shown her love for throughout our whole friendship. I had been trying to get ‘Big Romance’ right for years and Abi was someone that pushed me to keep going with it, so it only felt right to have her sing on this song with me as it kind of started to feel more like our song than just mine.
‘Big Romance’ by Lucia and the Best Boys, featuring Abigail Morris, is out on 27th of May.
What is your favourite song on the album, or one that you are most excited for people to hear?
Aside from all the singles, ‘Wolf Cry’ is the one I am most excited about. The writing process for it was pretty fast but I chipped away at it over time anyway just because I loved writing it and almost didn’t want it to end. It was empowering to write and it taps into the darker side that I’ve always enjoyed in music.
Is there anything on the album or in your future that might come as a shock to fans?
I hope this album brings surprises for both of us!
Who else are you loving in the music scene right now?
I have been enjoying listening to Blondshell, Witch Post, Cloth, Lizzie Reid and Night Tapes!
‘Picking Petals’, an album by Lucia and the Best Boys, is out 31st July 2026.
