CITY LIGHTS – FLAIR, SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Scottish indie-rock band, Flair, released their new single ‘City Lights’ on July 4th, and it’s nothing short of incredible. An addictively energetic and bold sound coupled with great lyricism – City Lights is a fantastic addition to Flair’s discography.

Their newest single is preceded by an eponymous EP and two singles, ‘Ritual’ and ‘Come and Get it’, dating back to 2023. The maturity found through their two-year journey as a band is evident when hearing their progression in finding their own sound, exceedingly so in ‘City Lights’.

With a style they attribute to influences such as Fontaines DC and Wunderhorse, Flair still remains unique. There’s great familiarity, yet also invention, interwoven in their tracks, and ‘City Lights’ is just that – nostalgic and Stereophonics adjacent, but with its own distinctions, too. The production quality is to top standards, allowing for a crisp and encompassing listening experience – so it’s no surprise they were named The Scotsman’s Artist of the Week upon release. Their rising popularity doesn’t stop there, either – from gaining national press attention for  their debut EP to amassing an impressive 100,000+ views on their first music video, ‘Saccharine’, the buzz surrounding Flair isn’t unfounded at all.

Truly, their newest single is a standout in an already impressive collection. It transcends typical genre allocation, and earns itself a much more unique positioning, attributed more to a feeling than just a sound. Personally, I’d define City Lights as a late summer’s evening track, perfect to both dance and tap your feet to. The lyrics are sickeningly catchy, raw, and confessional – they interweave fantastically with the song’s instruments, too.

Flair, composed of five members, hold a very promising career, and they’re already doing great. Currently touring, and having just performed Sheffield most recently to great reception. I’d strongly recommend heading to one of their upcoming shows across the UK later this year. With a continually growing sound collection that seems to somehow keep getting better, yet remain varied, Flair are definitely a band to get listening to.
