Sabrina Carpenter left quite an impression on Saturday, 5th July, as she performed her biggest show to date in front of a massive crowd of 65,000 people. This follows from amazing nights with Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan and Olivia Rodrigo, to name a few.
The 2x Grammy winner and BRIT Global Success award recipient sold out two nights of the outdoor festival, riding on the waves of success brought on by critically acclaimed ‘Short n Sweet’. Joining her on night 1 were her friends Amber Mark, Beabadoobee, Clairo and more.
It’s safe to say that Carpenter has had the biggest year of her career so far, breaking records left, right and centre with hits such as ‘Taste’, ‘Please Please Please’ and everyone’s favourite summer song ‘Espresso’. Most recently, fans were treated to a new track, ‘Manchild,’ which serves as the lead single to the new album ‘Man’s Best Friend’. Carpenter has not only captured hearts with her music, but she has also made a name for herself with her dazzling show outfits, fun choreography and lighthearted, sardonic humour and of course her weekend at BST Hyde Park brought all of that to the forefront.
Preceding the Great Oak Stage were Amber Mark, Beabadoobee and Clairo. Each delivered incredible performances with stunning vocals and lots of energy, and charm. Fans eagerly rushed to find a decent spot for each set, and it’s safe to say that they were definitely worth it
When it was time for Carpenter to make her entrance, the air itself crackled with anticipation. Fans shuffled forward and whipped out their phones, eager to catch every moment. As the crowd by the Oak Stage became overwhelmingly full, a news channel inspired ‘Live from London’ news bulletin lit up the big screen as Carpenter herself delivered a news report. Soon after, the pop star made her anticipated entrance, donned with a sparkly red monogrammed bodysuit, and immediately burst into ‘Busy Woman’ backed with thousands of screams from fans.
“Damn, nobody showed up!” she grinned as she took a moment to take everything in. However, this isn’t her first rodeo. The die-hard fans might recall that 2 years ago, Carpenter opened for K-pop sensations Blackpink.
Introducing new track ‘Manchild’ was a 50s style ‘Manchild Spray’ advert, a cool nod to her 50s influences. The same style played a minor part in providing humour and paying homage to the era that has influenced her style. As for the track itself, fans seemed to have it memorised as they eagerly screamed along to every word.
Carpenter followed with a female empowered segment with ‘Coincidence’, ‘Sharpest Tool’ and ‘Because I Liked a Boy’. Her acoustic version of ‘Sharpest Tool’ was truly a standout moment as not only did Carpenter sing from the heart, but she also showed her versatility.
The playful vibe soon returned as Carpenter entered Act 2. She played around with spontaneity and improvisation as she arrested a fan for ‘being too beautiful’ and even gave bluer backing dancers their moment to shine via a dance off. She took this moment to change into an equally sparkly black dress for the likes of ‘Juno’, a sultry performance of ‘Bed Chem’ and ‘Please Please Please’.
Closing the show was ‘Don’t Smile’ where she hovered the 65,000 fans in attendance whilst delivering a touching performance. Concluding the night was the song of the summer, ‘Espresso,’ as fireworks lit up the sky and Carpenter toasted to one of the biggest nights of her life with, you guessed it, an espresso martini.
Sabrina Carpenter at BST Hyde Park was everything fans expected it to be and more. She’s captured the hearts of millions with ‘Short n Sweet’ and with ‘Man’s Best Friend’ coming our way on 29th August, it just goes to show that her reign as pop princess is only just getting started.
