Gabrielle Gee’s latest track ‘Anything for You’ has brought a whole new sound to the Uk indie scene with her distinctive, raw voice and euphonious guitar. Her second ever release explores the naivety and blindness that often accompany the beginning of a relationship. In her lyrics she openly sings about her current girlfriend creating much needed representation within the indie scene.
Gabrielle Gee creates magic with her acoustic guitar and voice. Opening the track with the gentle strumming of guitar soon accompanied by drums that seem to echo your heartbeat drawing you deeper into the song and highlighting the intense love that often marks the start of a relationship. The vocals pierce through with raw emotion with lyrics that feel genuine and heartfelt. Gabrielle’s distinctive voice is full of feeling and emotion further drawing you into the song. The lyrics remain open to interpretation, but they transport me back to the feeling of that first relationship where it felt like only that person mattered. I believe we can all resonate with naivety and obliviousness that often accompany a first love. Yet Gabrielle doesn’t necessarily depict this negatively; instead, she highlights her commitment to her girlfriend while acknowledging the innocence of her promises and thoughts.

The ensemble of the song remains smaller than most song, yet it does not compromise in quality at all. Each instrument has its own unique role, yet they harmonize perfectly to produce a truly individual track. The small ensemble is effective as it highlights each component contributing to an even more impactful piece that aligns with the nature of the lyrics and song. I particularly enjoyed the bass line as it enters and exits just at the right moments; not only is the riff catchy but it has been carefully used to strip back certain sections while enhancing others.
It is clear each artist possesses their own unique sound, yet I have yet to find an artist quite like Gabrielle Gee. While she draws clear inspiration from artist like Adrienne Lenker and Phoebe Bridgers her music stands apart and her sound remains individual to her. Although her music remains outside my typical preference, ever since her debut single ‘excuses’ I’ve been waiting patiently for another release. There is something captivating about her music whether it’s the fact I have never listened to anything like it or her raw voice that strike a chord within me. I’m one of many who remain eager for her to release her debut album ‘Anything for You’.
