DEE RAE: “PURPLE AND RED” – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Indie folk artist Dee Rae has just released their new single ‘Purple and Red’, marking their first release of 2025!

Upon first listen, I was really surprised by the lush guitar sounds and how they are well sustained throughout the entire track. The song offers a really nice dive into the sonic world of this artist and seems to be a great starting point for any new fans or listeners.

The track commences with the same guitar chords aforementioned, before vocals begin to take the lead. The vocals in the song, particularly their downtempo and soft projection, really helped me to put this song into perspective and really understand its themes and replicate them really well.

One particular segment of the song I really enjoyed was the bridge section of the song, which I could tell uses a different, more heavy guitar and I feel gives off more of an angry vibe than the rest of the song, adding a really nice shift in tone which I think a lot of listeners will enjoy. The themes of this song explain it’s downtempo and emotional rawness, as it speaks a lot about self-expression. This theme is a good one to include in an indie folk track as the genre often uses a more low key and slower melodies.

‘Purple and Red’ marks the first ever release on Come Play With Me’s new artist development programme ‘Next Up North’, which is helping emerging artists (specifically of marginalised genders and sexualities) be seen and heard by potential new fans and help them get prepared for similar opportunities they may see in the future.

Overall, this song is another fantastic iteration of Dee Rae’s discography, showcasing a passion for indie-folk music and all of its creation. What’s next for them is bound to be nothing short of amazing!
