MOB WIFE: ‘THANK GOD FOR CARPARKS’ | SINGLE REVIEW

Mob Wife, the melodic and high energy post-hardcore act that sprouted from Belfast, with their debut release dating back to 2018, has released their newest song “Thank God For Car Parks”. This song focuses on the changes of the scenery in Belfast, with the track being named after a comment in a Twitter thread discussing how a portion of Ormeau Park is to be turned into a parking lot. The comment simply reads “Thank God for car parks”, leaving us with this simple yet comedic tongue in cheek song title.

Moving to the cover of this single, the simple yet tasteful white and greys of the overexposed multi-story car park bleeds into a solid white backdrop. It’s laid-back and metaphorical nature matches both the soundscape and message of the single. Mob Wife’s logo present in bright blood red in the top left corner seems to stay nearly identical as it was 6 years ago on their release “Mob Wife  / Cruiser”.

Onto the track itself, the thumping drums and distorted bass build a rumbling soundscape for the vocalist to come in his usual half talking – half singing manner. The guitar in this track leaves a decent room for the big boomy drums and bass. However, this track falls slightly short sonically and in memorability. The vocals seem less intense than those of their earlier tracks – (specifically referring to “Warm Water”). The bass guitar is almost drowned by the massive low  end sound that the thumping toms give, with the distorted rattle-y distorted treble of the bass being barley present. The bass peaks above the drums ever so slightly, only to be smothered from the top by the sparse guitar parts. The song’s message screams punk and unwavering signs of community from the Belfast residents against gentrification, the lyrics and ferocious drumming heavily supporting the ideals. The track overall unfortunately falls short of it’s desired  effect on the listener – taken down a notch by it’s muddy mix and lengthy run time.
