TERRY GUY: CLAP – SINGLE REVIEW

Being in the music industry for almost 10 years, Terry Guy has experimented with sound throughout different singles, as well as his 2022 debut album ‘Cloud Zero In Society’. The newest addition to his discography ‘CLAP’ – which released on December 15 last year – explores the political state of the UK over an abrasive and highly catchy beat, alongside showing off Guy’s lyrical talent gained over his wide range of tracks created.

The track opens with a slightly muffled, harsh-sounding beat which takes on an electronic and trap influences. Opening with solely the instrumental brings a fair amount of anticipation to the lyrics, meaning they can grab attention pretty quickly! The track becomes quite eye-opening after the lyrics are introduced, particularly the comparison of the political issues in the UK to a ‘puppet show’. I was really interested in the lyric ‘There’s no music to enlighten us, there’s no light’ as it has the potential to spark huge conversation about the outlets we use to get away from harsh realities, whether it’s music or something more deep and harmful. Being both the sole writer, performer and producer of the song, Terry is able to really create a world around this song and it’s always nice to see an artist have full creative reign with their idea.

Compared to Guy’s last few singles, ‘CLAP’ is definitely more avant-garde and experimental in terms of its production. The industrial sounding beat, which becomes heavier throughout the track, seems to be very reminiscent of electronic producers such as SOPHIE, who maintained a very upbeat and strong sound throughout a lot of her discography. Although the use of different sounds is very minimal, it allows the listener to really focus on the lyrics, which are really important to the message given by the track.

Overall, this track has a very important theme, yet still remains upbeat and nice to listen to! The track is a solid piece of music, fit for casual listening whilst also being attention-grabbing. I am very excited to see what is next for Terry Guy with his second album dropping this year! It will be really interesting to see how “CLAP” plays into the themes represented in this album.
