This Fallen City’s ‘Nightmares’ is a compelling track that delivers a confluence of hard hitting sound and vivid storytelling. As the second single in their unfolding narrative, the song plunges listeners into a world of chaos and destruction depicting a scene of the world consumed by flames and fear. In the band’s own words they describe the song as “beginning the narrative of destruction. ‘Danger’ was the track to start everything off, implying something is coming.
‘Nightmares is [written] from a first person viewpoint, watching as the destruction is happening before their eyes
Lyrics such as “the flames of hell rain down” and “all our nightmares become a reality” emphasise the unfolding chaos. Following the foreboding tone set by their debut single, ‘Danger’, ‘Nightmares’ offers us a closer look into the band’s exploration of resilience in a cataclysmic event.
Opening with a tension building guitar riff, the track doesn’t waste time in establishing its intensity, drawing listeners into a relentless energy that drives the song forward. The instrumentation is layered with precision from the basslines to the pounding drums. At the forefront, Josh Blake’s dynamic vocals command attention; fluidly moving between anguish and melodic introspection, helping bring the track’s dystopian imagery to life. The shifts in dynamics mirror the unpredictable nature of the destruction described in the lyrics.
‘Nightmares’ isn’t just a song, it’s a piece of a larger story that This Fallen City is carefully unravelling. As the follow-up to ‘Danger’, it reinforces the band’s vision of blending heavy rock with evocative storytelling, setting the stage for what promises to be an ambitious and immersive saga.
This Fallen City are a hard rock band based in Wolverhampton, consisting of vocalist Josh Blake, guitarist Mike Done, bassist Rob Jago and drummer Matt Williams. The band completed their line up in 2023 and began bringing their story to life for the world to hear.
