On the twenty-fifth of October, Bobbie Coles released a brand new single titled ‘Ceiling Song’. The song, following 3 singles and an album, ‘Dystopian Minds’, is a fantastic addition to Coles’ steadily growing discography, which features distinctive music that has a strong juxtaposing sound – dubbed as ‘relaxing’ yet also ‘punchy’.
The newest single stands out from the rest of the Devon based singer’s work, as it explores the different workings of indie folk when met with powerful combinations of melancholy vocals that are designed to ‘hit home’. Its creation is clearly influenced by Coles’ motivation to make music- to ‘connect and to understand’.
The soft guitar and raw lyrics work together seamlessly and really effectively display similar features to some of Coles’ influences which include Elliott Smith and Phoebe Bridgers. As the song progresses, the guitar picks up and the vocals gain a fiercely passionate tone – it is evident Bobbie has a connection with his lyrics and allows for the ‘stripped back’ feel the song possesses.
Whilst the track isn’t loud or overwhelming, the emotion is heard loud and clear – Ceiling Song is a vulnerable single, but doesn’t feel confessional. The emotionally exposed feeling emphasised by both the lyrics and use of guitar feels more blatantly honest, allowing for listeners to relate and be moved by Bobbie’s sound.
With many songs for you to listen to on his Spotify, Bobbie Coles has much to offer for those who enjoy personally influenced music that sounds beautiful and holds meaning.
