THE SLOW COUNTRY: WALKING SONG – SINGLE REVIEW

Desolate and lonely, yet simultaneously filled with an unmistakable passion and intrigue, this new single from London-based alternative-folk six-piece band The Slow Country can draw any listener in, like a child listening to stories of old by a fire. This narrative epic, titled “Walking Song,” is a journey through many movements, each delivering eloquent symbolism and powerful imagery. Almost like a movie put into song, this new song is reminiscent of older folk songs yet has a modern twist that keeps the melody marching forward to create an anthem of resilience and courage. 

The opening guitar lick sets the song’s tone, perfectly encapsulating this epic’s Western-esque feel. It is masterfully played and merely shows a piece of these musicians’ masterful playing alongside their unique composing. Following this intro comes a more modern instrumentation, showing off how The Slow Country can combine older and contemporary elements for a completely unique sound. Much like the title of this song suggests, that being “Walking Song,” drums and bass keep the melody marching forward at the perfect tempo. All this is accompanied by powerful lyrics depicting a harrowing and disorienting journey. Said lyrics are complemented by wailing vocals, creating the hauntingly nostalgic imagery the lyrics describe. Followed by equally powerful bridges and choruses, “Walking Song” is an emotional journey that captivates the listener from start to finish and is a testament to these musician’s skills and ambition.  The song captures the feeling of leaving home in search of something more and the emotional toll it takes. It is a testament to the power of music to evoke powerful emotions and evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Waking Song” is completely self-funded and self-released. It is The Slow Country‘s first single, though certainly not the last. This song was recorded in Liverpool at Carney Sound Production, featuring artwork by artist Hugo Winder-Lind (Frequent collaborator of The New Eves). Though this is their first single, The Slow Country are certainly not new to the scene, and have opened for many bands across the UK, including The Last Dinner Party, Trudy, and the Romance and Pem. After selling out multiple venues throughout Manchester, they’re headed toward London, where they will play at venues all across the city. 

Walking Song” marks an impressive debut for The Slow Country, showcasing their ability to blend classic folk influences with modern sensibilities to create a timeless and innovative sound. The track’s haunting imagery, powerful lyrics, and expertly crafted instrumentation make it a standout piece, capturing the emotional weight of a literal and metaphorical journey.
