Following a year of entry into Leeds’ live music scene and a handful of powerful singles, Will McPherson recently released ‘Mathematic’, a debut EP that shows no signs of slowing down.
The titular track ‘Mathematic’ carries the sentiment, bursting into your headphones with exhilaratingly high energy. In only the first song, Will McPherson’s talent of filling space is clear; the song is captivating for the many layers it contains, pulling you into the world of ‘Mathematic’.
McPherson’s talent shines through to ‘Guest List’, the epitome of ‘Mathematic’s addictive phrasing. His vocals flow alongside a dynamic instrumental, between spoken and sung with the charismatic confidence of an already established artist. Unwavering confidence in his words further set the EP up as an exciting glimpse into what is yet to come.
Though, in terms of ‘Mathematic’ itself, the build-up never seems to completely release. In particular, ‘Waiting for the Weekend’ feels somewhat lost, missing any major distinction from the other tracks. Still, the EP is solid and technically faultless, and leaves hope that it is merely a beginning, creating anticipation for how McPherson’s sound will develop.
However, the following song, ‘All my love’, breaks up the flow, introduced by impactful layered vocals. Alongside a distinctive guitar use, this song becomes a standout on the EP with arguably the most powerful vocal and instrumental moments of all.
On ‘Mathematic’, Will McPherson goes out with the same magnitude he comes in with – his confidence encapsulated in the lyric, ‘If I was a spy for a day, I reckon there’d be a couple movies made in my name’ and, as seen by the track list’s unwavering strength, his conviction is clearly not misplaced; it’s true that in the varied instrumentation, especially in ‘Spy for aDay’s trumpets, and his compelling lyricism and delivery, the song is easily envisioned in a movie itself. Overall, this is a symbol for the potential that drives ‘Mathematic’ as an incredible debut.
