Sharp guitar riffs open Picture Nova’s new single Girl, bringing the Manchester indie-rock vibes immediately. It’s fresh and authentic sound is showcased right from the first chord, and the subtle nod to The Libertines is heard throughout.
Using its indie sleaze similarities, the instrumentation of Girl is perfectly suited to the message the lyrics are putting across, with the storyline following that of a quick night out crush. The deep bass line and electrifying guitar hooks solidify Girl in the sticky floors and sweaty crowd category, showing Picture Nova‘s likeness to early Arctic Monkeys and The Reytons. It’s clear throughout the track that Picture Nova‘s punk energy was made for sold out gigs and with Girl‘s dynamic sound, you can almost feel the atmosphere of a live show through the studio recording.
Hailing from the vibrant Manchester music scene, Picture Nova are an energetic four piece consisting of Arthur Baker (vocals and rhythm guitar), Brad Hughes (drums), DaNeel Selly (lead guitar) and Callum Smith (bass). After forming in 2022, the band started off with the idea of just being a cover band, but by the end of their first practice together, they’d already written their debut single, Nancy. Still riding on the wave of success from that single, Picture Nova have performed at many music venues across the north, including The Ferret Preston and Retro Bar Manchester. Picture Nova have also gained the attention of Dublin-based band Pants On Fire and are supporting them at their Star and Garter show on the 18th of October. Their inspirations of local based bands such as The K’s and The Reytons (as well as broader based bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Royston Club) is heard throughout both singles and their similarities to these bands has also helped them to gain more loyal fans.
Following the success of Nancy, Picture Nova‘s fans had high expectations of their next single and the band did not disappoint. It’s steady rhythm and lively sound matches with their raw lyrics and memorable riffs, and means that Girl is a definite on an indie-rock fan’s playlist. With its depiction of heady instant attraction, the instrumentation of the song itself sounds exactly like experiencing this infatuation. Joining the stereotypical indie rock love song category, Girl is truly the track that could mean big things for Picture Nova.
