NELL MESCAL SHARES NEW EP: ‘CAN I MISS IT FOR A MINUTE?’ | REVIEW

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Nell Mescal’s potential for worldwide stardom is unmistakable. In a remarkably short time, the talented Irish singer-songwriter has gone from regularly achieving viral fame on TikTok with her covers to producing a series of successful singles, such as Missing You and Graduating. Her debut EP, Can I Miss It for a Minute? has now been released, just five days after she turned 21.

Can I Miss It For A Minute? is a striking work of art that explores themes of personal development and wistfulness. Featuring captivating tracks like Killing Time and Warm Body, the EP masterfully combines soulful melodies with lyrics that provoke introspection. According to Mescal, Can I Miss It For A Minute? is a concept album that beautifully conveys the challenges of maturing, relocating, and reconciling past traumas with present feelings. She does so in a way that finds her committing even further to painstakingly honest songwriting—opening the EP with the verse, “I’ll take a warm body / If I can’t have love / Or I’ll go out drinking / ‘Til I find the one, on the track Warm Body, and singing confrontational choruses like, “I’m not gonna forgive you / ‘Cause you’re crying at a song I wrote you last year / It’s been a whole year.

Mescal’s newest EP reveals a profound reflection of a transitional period in her life. Her songs offer a touching portrayal of the highs and lows that accompany maturity, with a particular emphasis on the agony of losing a beloved friend. During a recent writing session with a friend, Mescal experienced a revelation regarding the influence of songwriting. She expressed that when we write, we frequently unknowingly express our deepest sentiments. Nonetheless, when we read what we have written, we are suddenly confronted with the stark reality of our emotions.

Mescal is a rising star in the music industry and her unique sound and storytelling style has been influenced by a diverse range of musical genres and artists. Her music is a beautiful blend of Ethel Cain’s haunting melodies, Lucy Dacus‘ introspective songwriting, and Florence Welch’s commanding presence. Over the course of last summer, Mescal made a huge impact on the music scene by delivering a series of unforgettable performances. She graced the stages of several major festivals, including Latitude, All Point East, Kendall Calling, and Electric Picnic, and wowed audiences by opening for some of the biggest names in the business, including HAIM, Florence + The Machine, Dermot Kennedy, and The Last Dinner Party. In addition, she managed to completely sell out her first UK tour in January, cementing her status as one of the most exciting new artists around.
