CHARLI XCX: ‘CLUB CLASSICS / B2B’ REVIEW

Charli XCX has just dropped two new singles, Club Classics and B2b, as a preview of her upcoming sixth album, Brat. The avant-pop singer also revealed that Brat is scheduled to be released on 7th June, along with the album’s tracklist featuring 15 songs. The upcoming album begins with a track named 360 and concludes with one titled 365. The album features intriguing song titles such as I Might Say Something Stupid, Girl, So Confusing, Sympathy is a knife, and Mean Girls.

Prior to the release of the two singles, Charli & Boiler Room released the broadcasts from the “Charli XCX presents PARTYGIRL” event, which caused a stir in NYC. The show set a new record for the most RSVPs to a Boiler Room event, with over 40,000 people registering to attend. Held at 99 Scott, the party featured DJ sets from Charli XCX, A. G. Cook, George Daniel, EASYFUN, and Doss, as well as special appearances from Addison Rae and Julia Fox.

Charli XCX & George Daniel for Club Classics / B2B artwork

Featuring artwork that seems to showcase the back of a fiancé and The 1975’s drummer George Daniel, Club Classics and B2b are two high-energy tracks perfect for raving. In Club Classics, Charli delivers her distinct speak-singing style over lively production, giving a shout-out to Daniel and the late artist Sophie: “Yeah I wanna dance to me, I wanna dance to A.G., I wanna dance with George, I wanna dance to SOPHIE, I wanna dance to HudMo.”

B2b has a more melodic feel, with a trance-like beat that is perfect for a packed, sweaty dancehall. It’s more of that layered, sticky sound that Charli is known for. Not her best work to date, but I think that she’s getting back into that delicious rhythm with her wicked charisma and technical prowess. It’s got this wild Synth combination, giving off this melting pot type of vibe, but it’s also not as entrancing as it could be if she lessened her attack and made a few volume adjustments.

Charli’s latest singles come after the debut of Von Dutch, her initial release for this album. She later unveiled a remix of the track featuring a chilling iconic scream by Addison Rae and extra production by her longtime collaborator A.G. Cook.

Prior to her Brat era, Charli was recognized for her Barbie persona and made a significant contribution with the song Speed Drive to a highly praised film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which received a best picture nomination. Brat follows her 2022 release Crash.
