NXDIA drops their latest single “Cool” | Single Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

NXDIA, the UK-based alt-pop artist of Egyptian-Sudanese descent, has made a striking return with their latest track “Cool.” This compelling addition to their discography builds on the established “dark-pop” sensibilities and grungy electronic influences. Released this morning, “Cool” is the first single NXDIA has unveiled since their debut mixtape, I Promise No One’s Watching. The track powerfully embodies the energy of “nonchalance needs to die,” serving as a bold manifesto against the performative indifference that often pervades modern dating and social interactions.

Renowned for creating a sound that is both raw and introspective, NXDIA embraces intimate, queer storytelling paired with a unique DIY aesthetic, often designing their own clothes and having an effortless, but super cool aesthetic. They are an artist unafraid to express their true self, having previously articulated a desire to step beyond their comfort zone and embrace discomfort. This dedication to authenticity is evident in “Cool,” where the effort to maintain a detached, low-maintenance facade is abandoned in favour of a more visceral and honest portrayal. If you enjoyed the viral, “She Likes A Boy,” you’ll find “Cool” to be its more confident, slightly more aggressive older sibling. The song’s kinetic energy and soulful, raspy vocals cement NXDIA’s reputation for the kind of electric presence that has made their live performances so highly praised.

Born from personal experience navigating dating, NXDIA explains: “I’m in my hoe era, and I wanna celebrate that! Seeing what works, what feels good and what doesn’t is a fun process. I hate this whole aversion to casual sex, how about we just enjoy the moment rather than overthinking stuff – everything is temporary anyway!”

Ultimately, “Cool” is a standout track for anyone who is exhausted by the effort of faking indifference. It acts as a “big, fat middle finger” to restrictive social norms, celebrating the “ugliness” of genuine feeling over the polished mask of being unbothered. By embracing the uncomfortable, NXDIA has delivered a track that is as liberating as it is sonically rebellious.

NXDIA is joining Brit-Nominated Cat Burns on her upcoming Spring tour, kicking off in Birmingham, April 10th. Grab your tour tickets here.
