VOTED MOST LIKELY: ‘COFFEE AT LUKES’ – SINGLE REVIEW

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4 piece midwest emo inspired Voted Most Likely released their debut single just recently after only four months of setting up. So far the single has seen 1.4k streams, which is definitely something to be proud of. The single, titled “Coffee At Lukes” intertwines references to Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Gilmore Girls, a show that swept the nation twice with its cozy ambience, wordy humour and iconic mother-daughter duo. The track holds notes from Bloc Party and REM, and the backing vocals trace the nostalgia that you might feel in Stars Hollow, a theme which runs through the track in “I still think back too frequently” and “looking through old photographs”. This is a poignant track that captures the tender yet turbulent feeling of nostalgia, intertwined with the ever-present yearning for a past that’s both lost and irreplaceable.

The lyrics are personal, laden with the ache of unspoken words and unprocessed memories. “I’m holding on to history,” the opening line declares, setting the tone for a reflection on relationships, growth, and the weight of regret. The imagery of looking through old photographs, haunted by the sound of laughs, and revisiting the intimacy of past moments, such as “another hotel room” or “lying there as I run my fingers through your hair,” draws on universal feelings of longing and the desire to turn back time.

There’s a subtle yet powerful connection to the beloved TV show Gilmore Girls—a nostalgic thread that ties these personal reflections to a shared cultural touchstone. The line “fly among the stars hollow” subtly nods to Stars Hollow, the fictional town where much of the show’s emotional depth unfolds. It feels like a tribute to those long nights spent wrapped in the comfort of a TV series, which served as both escape and connection to something larger.

Musically, the track’s production is tasteful and atmospheric, mixing melancholy with an underlying energy that echoes the complexity of the emotions described. The rhythm section pushes forward with a sense of urgency, while the delicate guitar lines and soft vocal delivery create a vulnerable space for the lyrics to truly resonate.

Coffee at Luke’s” is a song that thrives in its emotional vulnerability. The lyrics, paired with the wistful soundscape, evoke a sense of heartache and the bittersweet nature of reminiscence. Voted Most Likely has crafted a track that doesn’t just speak to personal loss but taps into a collective feeling of longing for the past—something we all experience but often struggle to articulate.

A piece of music that finds beauty in sorrow and invites the listener to reflect on the echoes of a voice long gone.
